(KMOV) – Police say a man was stabbed after trying to stop another man from assaulting his girlfriend in downtown St. Louis early Thursday morning.

The 33-year-old victim told police he was in the 300 block of Washington Ave. around 1 a.m. when he saw a man beating his girlfriend.

Police say the victim tried to intervene, but the suspect stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.

The victim says he was intoxicated and “passed out.” He later woke up and realized he had a stab wound.

He was taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Police say the suspect remains at large. He is described as a white man in his 40s with blond hair and a scruffy beard. He was wearing a blue jacket at the time.
