ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Safety questions continue to plague Highway 40 with months of emergency repairs almost finished.
Planks of plywood attached to the concrete structure can be seen in various locations from 21st street to the Poplar Street Bridge.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials said the planks of plywood help give the concrete shape where more than 60 expansion joints were replaced.
“We had all those joints along the structure that had to be replaced,” said MODOT engineer Deanna Venker, “and when they replaced them they placed those wood forms underneath.”
MODOT said the plywood is not permanent and it will eventually come down. In fact, some crews removed some of the plywood last weekend.
MODOT said the plywood is secure and there is no safety hazard.
MODOT said in the coming weeks crews will remove plywood near 14 street, where the two decks overlap, and some lanes may be closed.
