ST. LOUIS— St. Louis Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed is fighting to keep hundreds of Veterans Affairs from moving to St. Louis County.

Last week, U.S. government officials announced it was consolidating Veterans Affairs operations in the St. Louis area, meaning more than 800 jobs would move out of downtown St. Louis and to St. Louis County.

Close to 640 VA employees will leave a building on South 18th Street, and 180 more will move from the Robert A. Young Federal Building downtown. All will be relocated to Overland in St. Louis County.

Reed has started a petition on WhiteHouse.gov that needs 100,000 signatures by April 9.
