(KMOV) – An elderly man was killed after a fire broke out at a home in north St. Louis Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a home in the 5300 block of Theodosia near Union around 7:30 a.m.

Upon their arrival, they found the house engulfed in flames and were soon forced to evacuate after the fire became too intense. They eventually got it under control, though officials said it took some time.

Authorities said 79-year-old Charles Henry was found dead on the first floor of the house.

Firefighters believe the fire began on the first floor, spread through the walls and burned through parts of the roof.

Fire officials believe Henry may have been trying to put out the fire himself, but an investigation continues.

Neighbors tried to help but were prohibited by the smoke and flames.
