(KMOV) – Police say a man was fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run wreck on Thursday when he crashed into a car in north St. Louis, killing the driver.
According to police, a man was driving an SUV near the intersection of 9th and Market when he sideswiped a St. Louis license collector's vehicle.
The drive kept going and hopped on Interstate 70. He then exited at Branch St. and was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed when he ran a stop sign at N. Broadway and hit the broadside of a car.
The driver of the car, a 53-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others in the car were transported to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, 41, was transported to the hospital and released.
Authorities said firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get the injured victims out of the car.
Police said the employee in the city vehicle attempted to follow the SUV, but by the time he got on Branch Rd., the accident had already happened.
It was not immediately known if any charges would be filed.
