(KMOV) – A 22-year-old woman was taken into police custody after her toddler was found wandering a trailer park in O’Fallon, Missouri Thursday morning.
According to police, a maintenance worker located the 2 or 3-year-old boy walking on Fox Trotter Drive around 9 a.m. The child was found in a diaper and pajamas.
Neighbors say the boy wandered about 200 yards from the trailer he and his mother were staying. The mother does not live at the trailer park but was staying there with friends.
For about two hours, police and deputies scoured the neighborhood.
The mother later told investigators she'd been out looking for her child but detectives had their doubts.
"We had area saturated with eight to ten patrol vehicles, we were knocking on doors all around vicinity, we never located anybody that recognzied the child nor was searching for the child," said Lt. Dave Tiefenbrunn with the St. Charles Sheriff's Office.
The boy was taken to the trailer park's office and later put in protective custody.
When the mother, Tegan Summerfield, showed up, she was questioned then investigators returned with the woman to the home where she was staying. Investigators say the home lacked food, was dirty and there was no adult supervision.
Summerfield is facing several counts of child endangerment charges.
