(KMOV.com) – Officials closed all lanes of Interstate 70 near downtown St. Louis after a semi overturned Monday afternoon.

All lanes of I-70 westbound were closed on the Poplar Street Bridge shortly before 2 p.m. after a semi exiting the bridge onto the highway tipped over and dangled over the side of the exit ramp.

The truck was transporting four large rolls of steel. The driver believes the rolls shifted, which caused the semi to overturn.

Though he was wearing a seatbelt at the time, the driver was trapped inside the cab for about an hour.

St. Louis Fire and Rescue used a ladder truck to get beneath the semi and stabilize it while crews worked to free the trapped trucker.

He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Lanes of Interstate 70 were reopened for traffic at 5 p.m.

Further details were not immediately known.
