(KMOV) -- Police say a 25-year-old man shot his 27-year-old girlfriend and their 3-year-old daughter with a starter pistol in their home on Sunday afternoon.  The woman and child were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries to the head.

The woman was released from the hospital later on Sunday.  The daughter remained under observation with a superficial wound.

The shooting happened inside a home in the 6000 block of North Pointe Blvd.  Police were called to check on the welfare of the people inside.

The man, at first, refused to come out.  Police cancel the standoff 19 minutes later when the man walked outside on the lawn and dropped the pistol.

Police moved in and made an arrest.

Initially, police said the man was involved in an incident in another jurisdiction and was chased by police to the home.  Police later said that information was inaccurate.

Another officer said police were notified by family members who believed the man would harm his family on Sunday.
