(KMOV) – A 33-year-old man is in custody after he robbed an Okawville bank Thursday morning with the chief of police right outside the building.
Okawville Chief of Police Steve Milikin saw Michael Dawson running from the scene of the First National Bank on East Walnut around 8:30 a.m. He was wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans as he ran from the bank.
The chief pursued Dawson’s vehicle on to Interstate 64 until Dawson eventually tried to flee on foot.
Authorities say Chief Milikin caught up with Dawson after a short foot pursuit.
With the help of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Nashville Police Department, and the Illinois State Police, Michael Dawson was arrested at the 42.5 mile marker on I-64 by Chief Milikin.
Dawson was transported to the federal court house in East St. Louis where he was indicted and charged with criminal complaint with bank robbery.
Police say Dawson was not armed during the robbery and no injuries were reported in this incident.
If convicted, the charges carries a potential term of not more than 20 years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, or both, and a supervised release term of five years.
