ST. LOUIS—St. Louis fire officials say a 41-year-old woman died after going into her burning home to save her dog.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the victim’s family identified her as 41-year-old Janet Salsman. She died in the fire early Sunday at her home in the 6800 block of Magnolia.

St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Dan Sutter said firefighters found Salsman and one of her two dogs together in the house. He says another dog had been removed from the house before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters carried the woman out of the home. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
