(KMOV) – A man is in critical condition after he allegedly pulled out an Airsoft handgun leading Alton Police to open fire Tuesday night.

Police say around 4 p.m., officers responded to a report of an armed man in the area of McClure and Harriett Streets.

Once the officers located the man on Sidney Street, they ordered him to get on the ground. According to the report, the man refused to comply with the commands and instead drew a handgun from his waistband.

One officer fired at the suspect, striking him once. He was transported to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

During the initial investigation, authorities discovered the injured suspect drew an Airsoft –type handgun which reportedly looked identical to a glock semi-automatic handgun.

Alton Police Department is working with the Illinois State Police as they conduct a full investigation into this shooting.

Information about this case will be released as it becomes available.
