O'FALLON, Ill. (AP) -- Trees are an iconic part of the Metro East community of O'Fallon.

A tree image adorns the city's watertower, and an oak leaf is incorporated into the city's logo.

But some O'Fallon residents are upset trees that have stood for more than 100 years along neighborhood streets are being cut down.

Resident Susan Hertich says the city seems to be proud of planting new trees in some places, but she says they're cutting down trees in the older part of town and not replacing them.

Public Works Department Director Dennis Sullivan says the city is forced to cut trees that become diseased and start to drop branches.

But Hertich says the city's Historic Preservation Commission hopes to put together a policy to determine when trees should be cut down and who will replace them.
