O’FALLON, Mo. (KMOV) – The O’Fallon Police Department is asking for the public’s help finding thieves who are breaking into homes and stealing copper.

Officials said the thieves have broken into five different O’Fallon homes in the past month. Police said they target copper pipes in basements.

The recent burglaries were reported on Winter Hill Court, Royal Oaks Drive, the 6400 block of Starbuck Drive and two in the 100 block of Country Life Drive.

Police do not have exact dates of the thefts since the homes are unoccupied and not monitored every day.

Authorities said vacant homes are an easy target because nobody’s home and the payoff can be in the thousands.

It’s also hard for police to track down the suspects because neighbors often aren’t paying attention to empty houses.

The O’Fallon Police Department is urging residents to call (636) 240-3200 if they see suspicious activity near a vacant home.

Police said witnesses should take extra time to write down any important information, such as a suspect’s physical description, vehicle description and license plate number.
