(KMOV) – The city of St. Louis passed a new law in June that could cost people a lot more than the red light tickets.
The new ordinance says it’s a violation not to appear in court for violating any municipal ordinance. People who fail to appear in court will receive up to a $500 fine—five times more than a red light ticket.
Mayor Slay’s office says the new law is not aimed at the red light tickets but is meant to help raise $2 million to help cover the budget deficit.
The new law took effect June 2 and only affects unpaid tickets after that date.
