MARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) -- Northwest Missouri State plans to honor a student who was killed in an assault earlier this year.

The university will present the family of Tomarken Smith, 21, with his degree during winter commencement on Friday.

Smith was a senior from St. Louis majoring in pre-professional studies and minoring in coaching. He died from injuries he suffered Sept. 14 when he was assaulted outside a Maryville bar. Two men are charged with second-degree murder in his death.

A memorial service on Friday will include the ringing of the Bell of ‘48, which is traditionally done in memory of deceased students.

The Maryville Daily Forum reports the bell was donated to Northwest by the class of 1948 to honor those who served in World War II.
