(KMOV.com) – A firefighter is recovering after suffering burns while battling a blaze that swept through a home in north St. Louis home early Friday morning.

Officials say the fire broke out inside a 2-story house in the 4100 block of East Carter just before 5:30 a.m.

According to officials, they believe the fire started in the basement and spread to first and second floors. The St. Louis Fire Department enlisted the help of other agencies and were in the process of getting it under control.

A man who was inside the house when it started told News 4 he woke up to the smell of smoke and evacuated the home. He and everyone else inside made it out safely.

One firefighter was burned fighting the blaze, but he was treated and released.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
