(KMOV.com) - Hazelwood City officials are cancelling this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show because of budget problems.
The city hopes to save $27,000 by cancelling the show, but it’s only a dent in the $1.4 million deficit. Over the years revenue to the city has dropped because of the closing of the Ford plant in 2006, declining property assessments and a $4 million dollar annual bill to two outside fire departments.
Currently, Florissant Valley and Robertson Fire Departments protect areas that were annexed by Hazelwood decades ago. Yet under a state agreement, Hazelwood cannot bring in its own fire department to those areas.
In August, city leaders are hoping residents approve referendums; a new utility tax and a quarter cent sales tax.
