NORMANDY, Mo. (KMOV) – A Normandy School District bus driver has been charged with having sexual contact with a 13-year-old middle school student multiple times on the school bus.
Shawn McNeil, 26, was charged Wednesday with second-degree statutory sodomy and sexual contact on school grounds.
According to police, someone at Normandy Middle School became suspicious after they discovered McNeil and a girl were passing notes. That person called the Missouri Department of Children and Family Services, which launched an investigation.
Police said the investigation revealed their relationship had been going on for about three months, though authorities don’t believe sexual contact was made the entire time.
According to court documents, McNeil kissed the student, fondled her and used her hand to touch him inappropriately. Police said the incidents would happen after they arrived at school.
“Contact occurred usually in the mornings after the bus got to school and the other students got off the bus,” said Normandy Police Maj. Tom Madigan.
Authorities said they do not believe the two had sex.
According to Normandy Superintendant Dr. Stanton Lawrence, the district on Monday received a call from the state department of social services about the alleged incident.
McNeil, who has been with the district for the past three years, was removed from his assigned route and immediately placed on administrative leave.
“Like all other employees in the Normandy School District, this employee was subjected to state and federal background checks to determine whether or not he had a criminal history,” Lawrence said in a statement released Wednesday. “The district is participating in the investigation by the Normandy Police Department and will cooperate in any investigation by law enforcement or other government agency.”
Lawrence said district is taking proper steps to make sure the student is getting counseling or any support that may be needed.
McNeil remains in custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
