(KMOV.com) – The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will be moving into its new headquarters building located at 1915 Olive Street.

The old headquarters building was built in 1927. Dotson said it was in need of repairs that would cost around $70 million. Dotson said the building is not laid out efficiently for officers and investigators to do their jobs.

Dotson said the price tag for the new building is much cheaper than remodeling the current headquarters. Dotson told News 4 it will cost around $13 million to complete the new headquarters.

“This building was purchased for about $2.7 million in asset forfeiture, money we took from drug dealers,” Dotson said.

News 4 has learned bonds and donations covered the rest of the cost and no money came from the city’s general fund. Dotson said the new headquarters will be laid out better and will display a memorial for officers who are killed in the line of duty. The memorial will be in place where everyone can see it, it is currently located on the fifth floor of the old building.
