ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) -- The new police department in St. Charles County won’t begin operation until 2015, but the transition will begin soon.

Voters in the suburban St. Louis County on Tuesday narrowly passed a charter amendment creating a police department. Currently, an elected sheriff oversees a department that handles law enforcement duties.

Sheriff Tom Neer was a leading proponent of the change. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that a committee of employees in his office will help plan the transition. Neer says he will decide next November whether to seek appointment as police chief, run for re-election as sheriff in 2014 or retire.

The elected sheriff will remain in charge only of court security, transporting prisoners and process serving.
