(KMOV) – The Illinois Department of Central Management Services has reported that only 367 of 560 communities have received bids from salt vendors this year.

That could mean residents in nearly 200 Illinois communities may face slick roads this winter.
The road salt shortage is the result of last year’s record winter. A depleted supply means road salt prices could possibly double this year, if communities are able to find a vendor willing to sell.
The Department is now seeking new bids from vendors while telling public works departments to explore other alternatives.
