(KMOV.com) – Charges have been filed against a suspect who was relaxing on a couch near a man police say was stabbed to death in a Mascoutah home.
Joshua Rogers, 23, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder. He’s being held at the St. Clair County Jail on a $2 million bond.
Authorities say Rogers killed 59-year-old Richard Feldt,, who was found dead after officers performed a well-being check at his home in the 700 block E. Church St. around10:30 p.m. Monday.
According to police, they were performing the check after relatives said they hadn’t seen him since last Thursday.
Police say when officers initially arrived they found his truck in the driveway, but no one would answer the front door.
Authorities say a friend of Feldt’s who had a key to the house let the officers in. That’s when they found Feldt’s body on the floor. According to police, he had been dead for “more than a day.”
According to authorities, Rogers was found relaxing on the couch near Feldt’s body. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police say Rogers had been staying with Feldt, who ran a small painting business, on and off for several months. They say most recently he had been living with Feldt for about two weeks and was helping with the business.
According to police, Rogers had known Feldt most of his life. They say Feldt tried to help get Rogers’ life back on track several times but could not give a motive for the killing. Authorities say heroin may have played a role.
Police say Rogers also had outstanding drug possession warrants and had been convicted of burglary in 2010.
