O’FALLON, Illinois (KMOV) – Police say a mother was texting on her cell phone prior to a head-on crash that killed her 4-year-old child in O’Fallon, Illinois on Wednesday.

Police said Mindy Hoyt, 29, was texting while driving a van on Scott Troy Road near Weil Road when she crossed the center line.

The van then struck a GMC work truck with three men inside head-on.

Hoyt was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition. Her 4-year-old son, identified as Diego Rangel, was sitting in a booster seat and wearing a seatbelt, but he died at the scene.

One of the men inside the truck, 20-year-old Andrew Vollmer, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other two men refused to be transported.

Police said no charges have been filed because the investigation is ongoing.
