(KMOV) –  A man was accused of intentionally burning a baby boy in St. Clair County.

The suspect was convicted of battery back in 2008. Now he’s back behind bars in St. Clair County for allegedly burning a 1 year-old baby on his neck.

“It’s ridiculous, it really is, this child is sleeping, it’s not doing anything,” said Sheriff Rick Watson.

Sheriff Watson said Joshua Weigel was dating the boy’s mother when the incident occurred.

The biological father brought the baby to the sheriff’s office last week when he saw the burns and several bruises.

He is now jailed on a $100,000 bond.  “If he bonds out he shouldn’t be around that child,” said Sheriff Watson.

Sheriff Watson said it’s unclear how old the child’s bruises were.

Calls to the Illinois Division of Children and Family Services to see if Weigel was on their radar, went unanswered.

Sheriff Watson is now assuring this guy won’t be let out for jail overcrowding.

“These are the kind of people that don’t get released,” said Sheriff Watson.
