(KMOV) -- Collections of mosquitoes from the Hillsboro area have tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is the first collection of mosquitoes in Jefferson County where mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus this year.
The Jefferson County Health Department conducted mosquito tests in the areas directly affected on July 17. The department will continue to monitor mosquito activity throughout the county to determine levels of West Nile activity.
County residents are advised to use insect repellents containing DEET or Picaridin and wear light colored clothes when in areas where mosquitoes are active.
The Jefferson County Health Department encourages residents to remove standing water from items such as waste tires, cans, buckets, or other containers that can hold the stagnate water in which mosquitoes breed.
To prevent mosquito breeding, decorative ponds should be stocked with gold fish if they do not have fish in them already or should have a fountain to move and filter the water within the pond.
Officials also suggest residents keep their gutters free of debris.
