(KMOV.com) -- MoDot is taking on a major project that involves fixing a part of the battered Poplar Street Bridge.
MoDot said they plan to begin work on repaving the bridge after Labor Day and expect the work will take about two weekends to complete.
Many places in the bridge have no pavement as cars, trucks and semis actually drive over the steel plates supporting the bridge.
“It just feels like it’s falling apart,” driver Jonathon Vaughn said, “Not fun driving over it period, feels like it’s going to collapse.”
Other drivers like Jason Meggison said they are concerned about the current condition of the bridge, while MoDot said the bridge looks worse than it really is. They also said the bridge is safe.
Meggison said the worst part of driving on the Poplar Street Bridge is when traffic merges over the Mississippi River and all the lanes come together.
The new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge is schedule to open in 2014 and MoDot hopes the extra bridge will provide a needed support to alleviate the heavy traffic on the Poplar Street Bridge.
