ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) -- Drivers who took Interstate 70 into St. Louis from St. Charles County encountered heavier traffic Wednesday.
MoDOT says just as many drivers used the Blanchette Bridge Wednesday morning as before the westbound side closed.
Traffic engineers say the bridge has been close to capacity at the peak rush hour times the last two days, and warn drivers that if the pattern continues there will be major delays.
“If everybody can take those other roads, they should do that because we are right at that tipping point,” said MoDOT Engineer Tom Blair. “It would have only taken one flat tire, one stalled vehicle and things could have been a lot different. “
MoDOT also suggests drivers commuting to work in the downtown St. Charles area, to exit on Highway 94 instead of 5th Street.
