(KMOV) -- Road crews in both Missouri and Illinois prepared for a significant winter storm before it hit the St. Louis-area Wednesday night.
The timing of this storm was seen as problematic as many residents were going back to work Thursday after the New Year’s holiday.
News 4 checked with MoDOT, IDOT and the St. Louis Streets Department concerning Wednesday night’s weather.
Each department had crews ready and expected to have crews working around the clock into the early morning.
Though many of the main roads and highways were pre-treated, the challenge was going to be keeping the roads clear by rush hour in the morning.
Todd Waelterman, St. Louis Streets Dept. Director, said they usually have an appropriate balance of workers as the roads worsen.
"9 o'clock, 8-9 o'clock -- we'll have a full complement of people because it looks like once it starts it will come all at once and the roads will cover up quickly it's going to overtake the streets very fast."
