JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri secretary of state's office has pared back its website to try to prevent it from crashing as people look for election results.

Secretary of state spokeswoman Stacie Temple said people were unable to use the site Tuesday to find information on businesses, as they normally can.

The office also had taken its county-by-county vote totals from past elections off the website. But it restored that information later Tuesday.

During Missouri's Aug. 7 primary, the secretary of state's website experienced numerous delays as people sought information on election results. The office attributed the problems to new computer software and heavy usage.

Temple says Secretary of State Robin Carnahan wanted to avoid similar problems during the general election.
