(KMOV)-- A hallucinogenic drug sold legally as a bath salt has gained a surge in popularity in recent weeks.
The Missouri Poison Center at Cardinal Glennon has already seen more cases of bath salt abuse than the entire year of 2010, tackling 12 cases.
The bath salts cause a dramatic increase in heart rate and blood pressure when snorted, swallowed, or injected.
The Poison Center treated only eight cases in 2010.
The bath salts, sometimes sold under the names “Cloud Nine” or “Bliss,” are already outlawed in Louisiana. Other states have reported a jump in abuse lately, as well.
