ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Missouri highways have proven to be more deadly this year, something that has police concerned.

The number of deaths in car accidents has risen already 21 percent in 2012 compared to last year.

The Missouri Highway Patrol cannot account for the sharp increase, but they are pleading with drivers to pay more attention.

“The best thing is getting the message out to people that you can’t be texting and driving, you can’t be talking on the phone, you can’t be doing all these things that take your eyes off the road,” said Sgt. Al Nothum. “That’s really what we gotta do, gotta get the message out. It’s a personal commitment that you can’t be distracted while you’re driving.”
