(KMOV) – A deer hunter was killed after falling into a sinkhole in Pulaski County Monday night.

Authorities said Curtis S. Powelson, 31, was bow hunting near his home off Red Oak Ln. in the Buckhorn area when he called his wife to tell him he had shot a deer and was returning to the woods to track the animal.

His wife later called the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office to report him missing after he didn’t return home.

Officers and firefighters began searching and found Powelson's body at the bottom of a massive sinkhole near his home shortly after 3 a.m. According to authorities, the sinkhole was estimated to be between 65 and 70 feet deep.

Officials said they believe the sinkhole recently opened due to heavy rains last month and ruled the death accidental.

Buckhorn is about 105 miles south of the St. Louis area.
