(KMOV) -- Lawmakers in Jefferson City are thinking about eliminating sales tax if residents buy a used car.

The proposal would exempt cars from sales taxes as long as the car purchase is at least ten years old and was bought for no more than $15,000.

Local dealers said customers often worry about coming up with the money to pay the taxes within the required 30 days of the sale.

They pay for the car then they got to come up with like you say another $3-400 to pay for the sales tax  and they're broke,” said Bob Quinn with Auto Bargain Center.

The Missouri Senate gave the idea early approval and the House is also considering a similar bill.
