(St. Louis) - Homes and businesses across the St. Louis area are waking up to a watery mess after very slow moving storms packing heavy rain, lightning and hail swept through the region.
The storms lumbered through the region close to midnight and on into the early morning hours, catching many by surprise.
Storm drains and creeks could not handle the sudden deluge and water quickly started filling streets, basements and anything in its path.
The Schnucks store on Lindell was closed early Sunday after flash flooding from overnight storms sent water pouring into the store. It reopened around 11:30 a.m.
At day break on Sunday morning water was ankle deep inside the store. That was a big improvement over a few hours earlier when cars in the parking lot were submerged and water had worked its way through the store and all the way back to the meat department.
