Metro-East man accused of knocking disabled roommate out of wheelchair

GRANITE CITY, Mo. (KMOV) – A Granite City man could face elevated charges after he allegedly beat up his roommate, knocking him out of his wheel chair.

Police said Eckert Mathews, 51, told his roommate he could not live with him anymore at their hime in the 5400 block of Maryville.

He then struck the roommate and knocked him out of his wheelchair.

The victim was able to get back in his wheelchair and leave. He then went to a nearby business to call police.

Matthews was arrested and taken into custody, where he remains on at $50,000 bond.

He faces an elevated charge of aggravated assault because the victim is physically disabled.
