(KMOV.com) - Washington Park, Ill. is sponsoring a “Work and Learn” program to help clean up parts of the city.

The city is using federal grant money to hire area youth, ages 18-24 to clean up the city. The kids are paid $9.00 an hour and guaranteed eight hours per day. Those involved worked to trim overgrown weeds and pick up trash Thursday.

“This is a way to keep the kids off the street this summer. It’s also a way to take care of their own community,” said Ray Coleman who runs the program.

There are two phases to this project. Soon, the city will start tackling the vacant homes in the area.
