(KMOV.com) – Alton police have confiscated fireworks after several people were injured while handling fireworks over Independence Day weekend.

A 51-year-old St. Charles man is in critical condition after a firework exploded in his hand, injuring his arms, chest, and face. Authorities also said an Affton man lit a bottle rocket and destroyed a garage. A 16-year-old lost part of his hand while using fireworks.

Police said fireworks should be handled by professionals.

“You are required to have training before you can denote fireworks in Illinois,” said Emily Hejna with Alton police.

Fireworks are illegal in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and Illinois.
