(KMOV.com) – Chances are increasing Missouri voters will weigh in on marijuana legalization in the near future.

Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander announced Wednesday he has approved 13 different petitions to get an amendment on the ballot.

But before a petition appears on a ballot, it would need almost 158,000 signatures by May 2014. While 13 may sound substantial, all of them were filed by Dan Viets, an attorney and advocate for marijuana legalization based in Columbia.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he filed 13 petitions because each one is slightly different.

The minimun number of signatures need is based on 8 percent of the number of voters in the last Missouri gubernatorial election in six of eight state congressional districts.

Viets' website, Show-MeCannabis, is located here.
