(KMOV) --- St. Louis authorities are actively searching for the thieves who shot a man in a Tower Grove neighborhood Tuesday evening.

“He’s like got blood all over him; he goes I was just robbed I think I've been shot,” said Zack Nunley, after finding his neighbor shortly before midnight.

Nunley said he opened his door to what he called a scene out of a horror movie when he found his neighbor frantic and bleeding from a bullet wound on Minnesota Avenue.

“Somebody knocked on his door, acting like they knew him and he opened the door. They pushed in and pulled a gun and at one point he fought them off,” said Nunley.

Police say the victim did try to grab the gun away from his attackers but it went off, hitting him in the stomach.

The thieves ran off with the victim’s cell phone and left him with a single gunshot wound.

He was transported to an area hospital where he is stable but listed in serious condition.

“I'm glad he's ok and glad he got out,” said Nunley.
