SALEM, Ill. (AP) -- A southern Illinois judge has ordered a life sentence without parole for a man who authorities say rammed an unsuspecting pedestrian with his Jeep before raping her and stabbing her to death.
Thirty-year-old Neil Barrall was sentenced this week in Marion County, where he pleaded guilty but mentally ill in July to first-degree murder and criminal sexual assault.
The Centralia Sentinel reports that Barrall agreed to the life sentence.
Authorities believe Barrall killed Michelle Cavaletto randomly in October 2007 while the first-grade teacher was walking along a rural road not far from her home near Walnut Hill.
