ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A man convicted in the 2011 fatal shooting of a 7-year-old St. Louis girl was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Elvis Smith in July was found guilty of first-degree murder after he shot J’Nylah Douglas on a playground on May 24, 2011. She died of her injuries about two weeks later.
Smith was also sentenced to 30 years in prison for an additional charge of armed criminal action.
Police said Douglas was playing on the Clinton Peabody playground in the 1400 block of Castle Lane in south St. Louis when she was struck by a stray bullet. Smith later admitted to firing the bullet while arguing with another man during a drug deal.
Smith’s sentence does not allow the possibility of probation or parole.
