EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A man is accused of resisting arrest and fleeing police Wednesday afternoon.

A Venice police officer reportedly attempted to pull the suspect over around 2:30 p.m. for a routine traffic stop.

The driver reportedly became confrontational during the stop and punched the officer in the face, then fled the scene.

After seeing a female passenger and what he believed to be a one-year-old child in the car, the officer elected not pursue the suspect. He instad put out a radio alert on the vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended shortly after by East St. Louis police near the intersection of South Main and Interstate 55.

Authorities aren’t releasing information on the suspect. The officer has not sought medical attention.
