(KMOV) – One man was killed after a vehicle slammed into a fire hydrant and landed on top of a parked car at a north St. Louis gas station early Monday morning.

According to police, four people were in a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on N. Broadway near E. Grand around 1 a.m. when the driver lost control.

The SUV then struck a pole, rolled over and landed on top of a parked car at a nearby BP gas station.

Police said 32-year-old Corey Criswell, who was siiting in the rear left passenger seat, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A group of witnesses helped the driver and two other male occupants get out of the vehicle. They were hospitalized in stable condition.

According to witnesses, the SUV involved was racing with another vehicle down Broadway when they came to a red light. Witnesses said the driver of the SUV tried to make a turn at a high rate of speed and that's what led to the wreck. That was not confirmed by authorities.

Additional details were not immediately available.
