(KMOV) – A man was charged after he was shot by a police officer in north St. Louis Tuesday night, authorities say.

Reagan Hess, 36, was charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The incident happened in an alley in the 3500 block of Paris near Lexington.

Two officers reportedly saw three males walking. One of them is said to have had a handgun. Police attempted to stop the males, and the one with the gun ran.

One of the officers pursued the suspect on foot while the other drove their patrol vehicle to the other side of the alley in an attempt to stop the suspect. The 36-year-old suspect then pointed a gun at the officer on foot. In fear for his safety, the officer fired at the suspect, striking him in the leg.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released. His weapon was recovered at the scene.

The other two suspects walked away. Police say they want to talk to them as witnesses, not as suspects.

No officers were injured.

The 27-year-old officer who shot the suspect is on paid administrative leave. He has been a police officer for just over two years.
