(KMOV) – Police say a man flourished a weapon at a Festus Steak N’ Shake before leading officers on a chase and holding two children hostage during a standoff Wednesday night.

According to police, officers responded to the Steak N’ Shake in the 900 block of Veterans Blvd. around 9:50 p.m. and learned the man, who allegedly had showed off a weapon, left the scene in a blue Oldsmobile.

An officer saw the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the suspect accelerated and a chase ensued. The pursuit continued until the vehicle crashed at a church at the intersection of Harris Ln. and S. Adams St. The suspect then got out of the car and ran. Police later learned the vehicle had been stolen from a DeSoto Hardees.

Police chased the suspect on foot to the Festus Garden Apartments. The suspect ran to the 520 block of Tymberwick and forced himself into an apartment where a woman was inside with her two toddler-aged children.

Authorities evacuated other residents of the building. The mother of the children eventually came out, but said the suspect wouldn’t release the kids.

Police contacted the suspect, who threatened to hurt himself and the children if officers didn’t leave.

He released the children about 30 minutes later. After about 30 more minutes of negotiations, the suspect surrendered.

The children were reunited with their mother and all three refused medical treatment. Authorities said the children were not injured

Charges have not yet been issued against the suspect.
