(KMOV) – A man shot and killed himself during a standoff with police after threatening to shoot his wife at their home in De Soto, Mo. late Sunday night.

De Soto police say they received a call from a woman whose 25-year-old daughter told her her husband had a loaded gun and threatened to shoot her at their home in the 700 block of S. Fifth St. around 9:50 p.m. Two children, ages 1 and 2, were inside the house at the time.

About 10 minutes later, a Hillsboro police officer saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer pulled the vehicle over and discovered the driver was the father of the woman being threatened.

Authorities made contact with the woman, who told them she and her children had barricaded themselves in a downstairs bedroom with her husband upstairs.

De Soto police and Jefferson County Sheriffs then set up a perimeter around the home and heard a single gunshot from inside the house.

The Hillsboro officer directed the woman to open up a bedroom window and take off the screen. She then handed the children out the window before climbing out to safety.

A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department tactical team entered the home around 1:30 a.m. and found the 27-year-old suspect in an upstairs bedroom dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say he had been under a doctor’s car for a mental illness.

The incident is still under investigation.
