(KMOV) – A man has been charged with using an ax to attack a woman at her Villa Ridge home on Sunday.
Jason Smith, 33, was charged Monday with first-degree felony assault.
According to police, officers responded to an apartment in the 990 block of Osage Village Ct. around 1:30 a.m. after getting reports of a woman screaming.
Police said upon their arrival, officers found a couch on fire in the woman’s apartment. They tried to extinguish the fire, but it rekindled why deputies were trying to locate the victim.
While evacuating the building, police found Smith and took him into custody. The victim was later found at a neighbor’s apartment, where she had gone for help.
The victim told police she and Smith, an acquaintance of hers, went home with her from a bar. They began arguing and Smith began attacking her with an ax. She suffered cuts to her face, arms and torso.
At one point she managed to get away and escape through a window. That’s when she ran to the neighbor’s home.
The victim was first taken to Mercy Hospital in Washington, then transported to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.
Officials said while her injuries are severe, she was expected to survive.
Smith remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.
