Man airlifted, dog dies after truck collides with freight train in St. Louis area

 (KMOV) --  One man was airlifted to a hospital following a collision with a freight train in Winfield Wednesday night.

Police say a train collided with a pickup truck around 6:20 p.m. at Highway 79 and East Cherry Street.

The pickup truck was driven by Gary Nelsen, 30, who was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Nelsen, of Elsberry, is in serious condition. 

A dog inside the truck was killed at the scene. 

Authorities say the train was traveling at approximately 45 miles-per-hour prior to the accident.

Witnesses say the man was attempting to cross the tracks when the collision happened. According to the report, the railroad crossing was activated with lights and bells when the crash happened. 

Further details were not immediately known.
