FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Illinois (KMOV)—One Illinois highway worker is dead and four other men were hospitalized after a car crashed into a construction zone on Interstate 64 in Fairview Heights on Tuesday.
I-DOT officials said three contractors from Briteway Striping were preparing to do pavement markings on Interstate 64 near Illinois 159 around 9:40 a.m. when a car crashed into their vehicle parked on the shoulder.
Two of the workers were airlifted and one was taken by ground to Saint Louis University Hospital. One of those workers, identified as Dennis Beard, was later pronounced dead.
A fourth worker was transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the driver of the car was taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Their conditions were unknown.
A witness to the deadly crash told News 4 she saw the car moving erratically moments before the crash. The witness, who does not want to be identified, says the driver was in the left shoulder lane before veering towards the lines between the left and middle lanes of the highway. The witness says she called 911 about the driver, but seconds later he crashed into a construction vehicle where the three workers were standing.
All lanes on Interstate 64 eastbound were closed for most of the day, but reopened around 2:30 p.m.
Additional information was not immediately available.
