COLLINSVILLE, Il (KMOV.com) – A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday afternoon while trying to push his motorcycle out of an intersection in Collinsville.
Police said the accident happened around 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Vandalia Street/Highway 159 and Country Lane.
Charles F. Bakken, 68, was riding his 1982 Suzuki motorcycle when he attempted to turn onto West Country Lane. Witnesses told police Bakken's motorcycle had some sort of mechanical failure during the turn. Witnesses further stated Bakken attempted to push the motorcycle out of the intersection, but was struck by a pick-up truck traveling south on Vandalia Street.
Emergency crews responded to the scene a short time later. Bakken could not be revived and was later pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Bakken was not wearing a helmet and died as a result of blunt head and chest trauma.
The driver of the pickup was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. The case is currently under investigation by the Collinsville Police Department and the Madison County Coroner’s Office. Routine toxicology studies are being performed.
Funeral arrangements for Charles Bakken are pending, but are under the direction of Irwin Chapel Funeral Home in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
